Apple continues quest for world domination

These days, if you live in the countryside you are probably within a couple of kilometres of someone carrying an iPhone, if you're in a suburb, the chances are it's more like a hundred metres and if you're in a city, reduce that figure to a mere 10 metres. Yes, the iPhone is everywhere.

Unfortunatly for Apple, sales of their tablet computer, the iPad, were down below their expectations to a mere 4.69 million units in the March quarter, poor them. It's just as well for them that in the same time period; sales of the iPhone, Apple's flagship product, have soared above the 16 million expected to a whopping 18.2 million.

So why are the iPad sales below expectations?

Well, iPad has an 80% share in the tablet computer industry, so it's not like Apple are performing poorly or people don't think the iPad is a good tablet. In fact, tablet computers have been around long before the iPad and if you already had a tablet, you're not likely to have changed to the iPad in the short time its been available. What I'm getting at is that the iPad hasn't stolen religious users of an existing tablet in the industry, it has expanded the tablet industry into what it is now. My point, if people don't like the iPad, people don't like tablets.

People don't like tablets?

Well some people do... as we already know 4.69 million people liked just one type of tablet in the March quarter. But they aren't quite as good as laptops are they if we're honest? Sure, they look cool and they do fancy things and you can install an "app for that" or spin your screen around a few times. But I can install applications on my laptop, and my laptop is also pretty portable. What's more, on my laptop I can type without using an on-screen keyboard, I have much more storage space and it doesn't cost a fortune! I'm not denying that the iPad is a fantastic piece of technology, but it doesn't beat a good old lappy yet!
